With modern technology and improved materials this isn t as huge of a problem as it used to be but flat roofs do tend to last five or ten years less than sloped roofs made of similar materials.

Having a smaller surface area flat roofs require less material and are usually stronger than pitched roofs.
Cold roofs and warm roofs.
A flat roof is the most cost efficient roof shape as all room space can be used fully below and above the roof.
However over the last few decades new and advanced materials have been developed.
But such a low slope holds snow and water much longer than a steeply pitched roof and therefore needs a very different material to stay watertight.
As opposed to old built up felt roofing with joins new single ply waterproof membranes are now most commonly used.
Again it all comes down to the fact that they are less resistant to the elements.
